Algae Collection

The University of Tennessee Herbarium (TENN) houses approximately 3,000 algae specimen records, with 97% of the collection imaged. These specimens represent 116 families, 327 genera, and 802 species, totaling 815 distinct taxa. The most well-represented families include Rhodomelaceae, Gigartinaceae, and Sargassaceae.

The collection primarily covers North America, with most specimens originating from California. We also house a significant number of international specimens, particularly from France, Mexico, and Australia. Much of the collection was collected and annotated by Barbara T. Gittins, and includes additional contributions from renowned botanists Isabella Abbott and Stanley A. Cain.

This collection is accessible through the Algae Herbarium Portal, a consortium dedicated to algae collections, providing valuable data for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
